Part 1 - What's a Brand?

"Understanding the benefits of personal Branding is crucial to have a successful career"

You have listened to others speak about personal branding. It seems that branding is important. However, maybe you still don’t understand how to create a personal brand or why some branding works and some does not.

Don’t worry! There are only two essential ingredients for branding. This post is going to clarify for you exactly what personal branding is all about, and I will provide you a recipe for branding. I will dispel all your doubts and help you learn how to develop your own brand.

Between musicians, the word “brand” sometimes can generate feelings of mistrust and rejection. I hope this post will help you to heal this relationship between you and your brand.

Branding is crucial if you want to excel in the overcrowded marketplace that exists today in the classical music industry.

The Recipe Ingredients

1 · Communication

For most musicians, when we think about a mark or brand, the first thing that comes to mind is a logo, right? For some, it could be a seal, an image, or maybe a flyer with a photo on the cover. For others, it is a stamp, an image, or even an advertisement.

  1. This idea isn’t wrong, but there is more to it than that.

What and how you communicate through social media, videos, photos, interviews, concerts, etc. is going to craft the “brand” that the public associates with your name. This communication is an essential ingredient.

These videos, images, postings and photos are all things that help us to communicate, and therefore they have the ability to help create our brand! It is the first step.

However, there is one final ingredient that, without which, your do not truly have a personal brand:

2 · The Audience

Your brand is the result of reflection of how you communicate. Your brand is solely based on people’s perceptions of your communications.

The truth is while I am writing this post, the creation of your brand is already underway!

Your daily communications with your audience form your brand. What you broadcast, how people perceive what they see or hear from you, that becomes your brand.

Make sense? No? Are you still a bit skeptical? Well, now I am going to prove it to you!

Recipe Directions

As human beings, we all are constantly communicating, right? We are social beings. We are always broadcasting our thoughts and feelings to others. Our audience is constantly listening and interpreting this communication in his or her own way.

This communication is what makes people like you, dislike you or ignore you. The way you speak, dress, move, play, perform and write all contribute to your audience’s reaction to you as a musician as well as a person.

Mix these two ingredients together, your communication and the audience’s interpretation of that communication, and you have your brand!

You can influence others when trying to promote your artistic identity, but their perception of you is going to be based on, not only what you communicate, but also how you communicate.

  • Knowing your audience is crucial in order to know how they perceive you.
  • The ONLY thing you can do is to be genuine and communicate that reality to your audience.
  • You can imagine what you believe is your brand, but the truth is, your brand is in your audience’s mind.
  • And, if you want to know what it is, then all you need to do is ask them.
